Regain your confidence with breast reconstruction surgery
If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and you have undergone mastectomy (removal of the breast) there is no need to worry about your appearance.
Reconstructive breast surgery can provide you the confidence to live life like before.
The main aim of reconstructive breast surgery is to bring back the same appearance of one or both breasts affected by cancer. This may involve multiple surgeries.
There are two types of reconstructive breast surgeries-
This type of surgery relies on artificial implants to form the shape and size of the breast. It is identical to the other non-affected breast in case of cancer in one breast. Generally, silicone or saline implants are used.
Skin and tissues from other parts of the patient’s body are used to form the breast.
Over the years lakhs of women have successfully undergone breast implants. You must always get the surgery done by a registered medical surgeon at an authorized center.
Like any other surgery, it does involve certain risks and side effects but the number of successful surgeries outnumbers the failed surgeries. Many patients have reported none of the undermentioned problems such as inability to move the shoulder chest, leakage, or scar in the tissues, necrosis or death of tissue death, loss of muscle strength, changes in breast or nipple sensation, and in certain cases the implants need to be removed and another surgery needs to be performed.
In most cases, one is advised to avoid over-the-head lifting, sexual activity, rigorous workouts, and strenuous activities for 4 to 6 weeks.
It is best to follow your doctor’s advice because each case is unique.
Do ask your surgeon all the questions that arise in your mind and keep note of the answers before you make your final decision. Here are some questions to help you.
Though breast reconstruction surgery is widely and successfully carried out it is best to weigh its pros and cons in your case and assess if it best suits you.
